The exchange of virtual currencies in exchange for real money could be a problem for many online games. It can disrupt in-game economies, and causing imbalances in player experiences, or making games into pay-to play scenarios. In RuneScape, the trade in the digital gold currency is a major issue, leading to bots mining the resource, and even accusations that the option to buy in-game "bonds" with real-world cash amounts to gambling.
Today, Jagex has laid out plans to tackle the problem. In a blog post with the name "The RuneScape Team", Jagex states that "gold purchased via RWT is a major issue in any online game featuring an option to trade currency" The company also states that its "Anti-Cheating Team has taken a number of steps to tackle RWT sellers both inside as well out", it will be taking stronger measures with immediate effect.
Citing a "growing staff and new instruments", Jagex says it will no longer be in the business of acquiring gold and sources through RWT but as buyers. Its goal is to cut down the demand as well as supply.
Jagex promises to send "messages to those whom we've found engaging to engage in the RWT" within "the coming hours". "For anyone who has been involved RS Gold Buy, we'd like to make it clear that this is the single or only warning" said the statement.
